A bike trip through the Waterberg, four days of riding and exploring the area of the Limpopo province last week. For some, a great challenge to conquer four days in a row! Great roads, and some game spotting along the way!
This is an area less explored by road bikes. North of Gauteng, and a little to the left, it is the Waterberg!
Four days with maximum distance and elevation:
20 hours of riding
A group of riders formed the October Escape, and set out to conquer the routes and what they had to offer over four days.
Starting off just outside Modimmole, the trip took the riders north to the Legends Golf Resort, 130km for day 1, of flatish roads, but an extremely challenging wind and temperature made it a tough first day out!
The final stretch heading towards Hanglip, under a blazing sun!
The cammeraderie was strong, and the relaxed nature of the ride allowed the group to enjoy the time away, but offered challenges to test each individual, making these days memorable ones.
The second day was spent on quiet roads, and the group split up, so that a shorter ride and more adventourous option was possible, 100km or 155km. This was a fantastic day under cooler skies, with some challenging roads, but tranquil and relaxed. The wind played the game in our favour! Legends to Legends loop.
Heading out on the second day, quiet roads, tranquil setting, and the chance of some game sighting.
From the roads of Nottingham, to the Kloof pass, Adam stretches his legs!
The third day would take us around the mountain and up towards Vaalwater, and the lodge of Olievenfontein. Kloof Pass was the real challenge, gentle gradients to begin, and the what felt like a wall towards the end challenged us all the way to the drink stop.
The roads were fantastic, but the undulations would make the 100km ride a solid workout!
Not often you would encounter a herd of Cape Buffalo along the road. Thankfully behind a fence, although not sure how much of a deterent that would be..
A few thousand yard stares... a big day out, 155km day 2
When the going gets tough, some look for a little more. Next time we bring the gravel bikes!
The fourth day started off with fear. The rain was falling down hard, and the darkened skies did not look to let up.
Optomistic though, we headed out ready to ride as the sun came out. It turned into a spectaculer day on super roads, as we headed back to Modimolle.
Finishing under threat of the Highveld thunder storms, a day's ride with the wind on our backs. The mood was one of celebration and achievement. Four days of solid bike riding under the belt!
Successful journey! We made it! Close to 500km in four days.
The final venue of Silver Streams. Under the threat of thunder storms. Spectacular African scenery
The October Escape completed. Bike It through the Waterberg 2017!
